Experimental Build 4.xx

Nick | Beta | Monday, April 9th, 2007

Primary version #4. Estimated completion of 15%

New Features:
Theming via css, will be selectable (4.00)
“Home” state added (4.00)
Login subsystem added (4.00)
RSS Feed libraries added (4.00)
“Event” state added, will host events such as the logo-contest voting and polls (4.00)
SWF PostViewer Support added (4.03)
Shared Objects & Autologin (4.10)

Notes:
All memory leaks should be plugged, quite a few design related items are undergoing major changes. Initial SWF support should work for most flash files, however flash9 apps have the potential to behave badly until proper component selection is used within the postviewer. I’ve had some reports of postviewer scaling issues at 1024×768, and will work to fix these. A workaround in the meantime is to use the application in a fullscreen browser (F11) if you run a very low resolution.

You can now login using your old sagubooru account! You only need to login once, unless you logout or login somewhere else. As of 4.10, Sagubooru will store a local sharedobject which synchronizes with your account information and preferences on the server. This is NOT removed when you clear your browser history/cookies - as I know some are overly paranoid about security (a stolen sagubooru token could mean the end of the world afterall), I will include an option to destroy this under the soon-to-be account control panel. On another note, these shared objects are not browser specific, and are accessible between browsers. Adobe flash contains a very comprehensive sandbox, so you need not worry about us secretly collecting data about the contents of your drive for some dark advertising scheme.

  2. How does it feel to have the most sophisticated and huge j/image-site in the world? It is still at 15% and already better than anything that has ever been in existence.

  3. I agree with digifragger, it definitely better than anything that has already existed.

  4. Does anyone know if translations were successfully ported?

  5. Image notes and translations are slated for a future build, they will be ported in.

Summed up rather well, I’d say.

  7. You have to CLICK TWICE after opening an image to open it in a new tab. Shouldn’t this be as accessible as Zoom In/Zoom Out? How will the perverts users be able to mass-download these images?

  8. Not that I’m complaining… just waiting for version 5.0 to come out.

  9. Hi,

I guess I am a n00b but are images added yet, or have you only put up a few for testing?

When I search tags, I only get 1 result for every search.

Or am I doing it wrong?

So sorry for the gay question but I visited the forum but there was no tut-

  10. Demon Eyes - Currently almost all of the pictures from Danbooru’s old database are on the site, and a couple of thousand more that were uploaded while Sagubooru still was running the old code. The search function works pretty well as is, so I’m wondering whether you have marked the content filters or just are looking for pictures that there aren’t many of. Try a simple search for “Angel” and you’ll see if it works.

I’d suggest to join the forums as it is hard to offer support in a blog comment section.

  11. Hello. I would like to compliment you on a job well done! It’s looking awesome!!! but I do have one complaint, and that has to do with downloads. This problem will be solved soon, right? there are so many pictures I want, but I can’t save them. So please fix that so people can right-click and save! Other then that, IT”S AWESOME!!!

  12. “But I do have one complaint, and that has to do with downloads. This problem will be solved soon, right?”

You can save them, all you need to do is click “actions” up at the top left wen viewing a pick, then hit ‘Open in tab’ (its the first option) it will open the pick in a new tab and all ya got to do is right click the image in the new tab and hit ’save image as…’ (You probably already know about right clicking to save >:3)
    I hope this helps!

  13. Hi all! FIrst of all. sagubooru is looking so cool!! I’m so much impressed by the site layout. keep up the great work guys and keep suprising us!

anyway, for my fellow users, if you want to download any images w/o going on any other sites, this is what you do: click the pic u like (this opens a tab next to the search tab) and you will be presented by three sub-tabs. click on “actions” and click “open in tab” - this opens the image in a new window with its full resolution. Right click on the pic on the new window and click “save as”…an there you go!

  14. Thank you very much! That really helped out. Now can I get help on how to match two tags together? You can’t do it the old way, where you just hit spacebar once and it matches say “angel” and “game_cg” together. How do I do it now?

    Comment by HAKUIZM — April 25, 2007 @ 4:14 pm

  15. HAKUIZM: SaguratuS is currently revamping the search function, but until that is finished and implemented you can use +angel +game_cg to search for pictures that include both the “angel” and “game_cg” tag.

And once again I recommend to use the forums for support questions, at http://forums.sagubooru.com.

  16. Does the login for here work there? Or is a different login required? I’m kinda lost cause this does not seem to work there.

    Comment by nekole — April 30, 2007 @ 6:42 pm

  17. nekole: Currently you only can log in if you have an old Danbooru/Sagubooru account. The logins on the blog, the forums and the imageboard are entirely separated. Do not fret, you will be able to register again in the future.

As always I suggest to take support inquiries to http://forums.sagubooru.com as you will receive a faster reply there.

  18. I think rebuilding the code using Flash only (!) was the worst decision ever. One of the great things about Danbooru was its light weight and simple but elegant looks. And another main advantage: it was easy to handle.

The new experimental build does nothing of that. Please don’t get me wrong, I don’t hate Flash, it’s wonderful for embedding media, small effects and such. But it should DEFINITELY NOT be used for a whole site without a fully useable HTML-only counterpart.

I cannot use the full functionality of my browser (the context menu for example) since Flash does not allow that. And besides, clicking on an image and it’s tab (why a tab? I am the one to decide if I want a tab or not) results in a wonderful and bright empty page.

So far, the experimental build of Sagubooru is not as near as good as Danbooru (a far from its load problems) was. If you continue the development like you do, then you lost me as user.

  19. In response to mathbr, the site is built in such a fashion that allows anyone to build alternative interfaces, and in fact, we already have an ajax-only interface at ajax.sagubooru.com. Also, it should be noted that you can in fact use many of the features you claim to be unable to use - context menus for example. Additionally, you’ll be able to define the behavior of the client, so that it doesn’t open in an internal-tab on left click.

Flex2 was chosen due to where the framework and code is heading, and with technology such as Apollo, Sagubooru becomes quite a bit more than just a web site. The language choice was heavily discussed, and no real downfalls (Other than requiring the flash plugin) could be found either short term or long term. Nearly all existing browser functionality (Browser tabs, context menus, URL-navigation) can be implemented, along with much much more.

I suggest you refer to The Priority List if you’d like to get a rough idea of what is planned with the initial release.

  20. »In response to mathbr, the site is built in such a fashion that allows anyone to build alternative interfaces, and in fact, we already have an ajax-only interface at ajax.sagubooru.com.«

Yep, I found that one when browsing the forums for comments and really like it. Although it fully depends on JavaScript this interface allows me to fully use my browser as I am used to.

»Also, it should be noted that you can in fact use many of the features you claim to be unable to use - context menus for example.«

But you will never be able to implement the context menu I grew to like in Flash; that’s just impossible. And I’ll probably never will forget that it is a Flash site I am browsing; it just does not feel right.

»Additionally, you’ll be able to define the behavior of the client, so that it doesn’t open in an internal-tab on left click.«

    Good to hear that.

»Flex2 was chosen due to where the framework and code is heading, and with technology such as Apollo, Sagubooru becomes quite a bit more than just a web site.«

But due to the current testing phase you won’t be able to get real test results. Can you really tell that Flex2 will be able to keep up with the traffic Danbooru had?

»The language choice was heavily discussed, and no real downfalls (Other than requiring the flash plugin) could be found either short term or long term. Nearly all existing browser functionality (Browser tabs, context menus, URL-navigation) can be implemented, along with much much more.«

I’m sceptical about this but will give you some time. For now, I’ll be happy with the AJAX interface.

»I suggest you refer to The Priority List if you’d like to get a rough idea of what is planned with the initial release.«

Already read that a few times.

  21. The best layout and planning for a image sharing site I’ve seen. Speedy and well organized. Hopefully this will have a longer life than some others I’ve been to when danbooru went down.

  22. I’ve noticed on many .swf animations/files, while using them, there is a frequent case of the entire database literally collapsing in on itself it ends up no bigger than 300×100 pixels in size and can’t be resized and must be refreshed

    Comment by idsterMLG — July 16, 2007 @ 4:54 am

  23. It seems to me that no matter what my settings are when I open anything in a new tab, in Firefox, through flash it always puts that tab as active. It’s only a minor inconvenience, but it’s pretty RSI-ish, and I was just wondering if there was some way to counter this?

    Comment by dancing ferret — September 19, 2007 @ 8:56 am

  24. Two major suggestions for the interface overall:
    1. Fuzzy matching: If someone types in haruhi_suzumiya, then display all the images tagged suzumiya_haruhi and vice-versa.
    2. Set understanding: If the images are part of a set (a manga or serial), then links will be provided by the image to go to the next or previous image if applicable. (Maybe two tags defined like next=thisimage, prev=thatimage?)

I’m not sure if I should put this in a developmental place (haven’t looked at the forum) but I’m glad to see that you have gotten this far. Add these two elements into the database and the ajax interface (my personal favorite) will be nearly perfect, (not counting upload etc).
